Search results present as Internet hypertext links. __________________ THE MEDICAL LIST __________________ 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 PURPOSE AND HISTORY This Internet medical resource list is offerred in text form as The Medical List and as Medical Matrix-a hypertext database accessible using World Wide Web browsers like Mosaic. Medical Matrix is designed as a "home page" for a physician's or healthworker's desktop computer. Internet has traditionally been used by those who "browse" for information. These resources are offerred to a population of users who are often interested in the fastest possible access to knowledge on a clinical topic. Gopher access to The Medical List is available at the URL: (Uniform Resource Locator) gopher://una.hh.lib.umich.edu:70/00/inetdirsstacks/medclin:malet. Gopher allows key word searching and email of this document to any Internet address. Medical Matrix, http://kuhttp.cc.ukans.edu/cwis/units/medcntr/Lee/HOMEPAGE.HTML, is a project of the Internet Working Group of the American Medical Informatics Association. Medical Matrix uses icons and keyword searches to locate on line medical resources easily. The most current updates of the The Medical List and Medical Matrix will be maintained at the Internet addresses above. 1.2 AUTHORS, HISTORY, AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENT This document is authored by Dr. Gary Malet, Family Physician, gmalet@surfer.win.net and Lee Hancock, Education Technologist, LE07144UKANVM.bitnet@vm42.cso.uiuc.edu. Robert King, maintains the HTML version of this document- Medical Matrix. It has been put together with the help of a network of resource providers and individuals who participate in the Internet Working Group of the American Medical Informatics Association and its mailing list MMATRIX-L (See Section: Resource Guides). Their dedication in making global health resources more accessible is acknowledged. This guide emphasizes resources that are relevant to the clinical practice of medicine, interesting to a general population, and easy to retrieve. The Hancock List covers health science resources comprehensively. Please send any updates, new information, suggestions or corrections to: LE07144%UKANVM.bitnet@vm42.cso.uiuc.edu or to the HMATRIX mailing list (See Section: Resource Guides). 1.3 COPYRIGHT This is Version 2.3 of "The Medical List" and Medical Matrix, March 1st, 1995. Copyright (c) 1995 Healthtel Corp. These documents may be distributed freely. Unauthorized commercial use is prohibited. 1.4 DISCLAIMER The authors have made reasonable efforts to provide correct information but can not be responsible for the accuracy or currency of the information presented or the application of database information. 1.5 DESCRIPTION OF "MEDICAL LIST" ENTRIES 1.5.1. URL ADDRESSES Some of the resources in the Medical List use the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) format, which is basically "method://site.name/filepath".For example, "ftp://ftp2.cc.ukans.edu/pub/hmatrix" means "do anonymous ftp to the site ftp2.cc.ukans.edu, and get the file pub/hmatrix". 1.5.2 BITNET/INTERNET ADDRESSES Some entries and individuals in this database have Bitnet addresses- an addressing system within an intercampus network. Internet users may have difficulty sending to these Bitnet addresses because the "gateway" to get to the Bitnet address has not been specified. 2 INTERNET MEDICAL NEWS, MEDICAL MATRIX NEWS, AND NEW RESOURCES 2.1 INTERNET MEDICAL NEWS Internet use among healthworkers is growing rapidly. The number of medical resources has expanded dramatically since the December 1st, 1994 version of The Medical List. Mosaic and other advanced web browsers have taken hold as the "killer applications" that are bringing large numbers of new users to Internet. These have encouraged a very rapid increase in the number of radiographic and pathology images that are available over Internet. Many universities are now offerring xrays, MRIs, and multimedia interactive programs as part of education projects. Many of the browsers have been developed with a "forms" functionality that allows users to input information. The information or data can then be processed or enter a remote database or program. Applications include surveying, expert system work, "digital cash" transactions, electronic signatures, and on-line testing. A multicenter effort is underway to index and catalog Internet Medical Resources. The National Library of Medicine has developed a prototype search engine for keyword and functional searches of indexed Internet medical resources tied to the Medline database. 2.2 THE AMIA INTERNET WORKING GROUP Interested readers can learn more about frontier medical Internet applications and encourage the development of Internet health and medical resources by participating in the Internet Working Group. The Working Group had its initial meeting on November 8th, 1994 in Washington D.C. with over 300 in attendance. It has goals of improving access to global electronic health and medical resources and sponsors an Internet mailing list called MMATRIX-L.. To participate send your "subscribe " command to LISTSERV@KUMCHTTP.MC.UKANS.EDU. The Working Group will hold academic sessions including resource demonstrations and authoring tutorials in conjunction with the semiannual meetings of AMIA on the following dates: AMIA Spring Congress, Cambridge Hilton, Cambridge, Massachussetts June 24-28, 1995 and AMIA-SCAMC, New Orleans, La., October 28-November 1, 1995. Discussions will focus on Internet search tools, interfaces, data archives, networks, and hardware. Please send email to gmalet@surfer.win.net, or the AMIA membership committee at amia@camis.stanford.edu to inquire about Working Group membership. 2.3 MEDICAL MATRIX NEWS The Medical List categorizes Internet medical resources by disease and medical specialty. This new version begins a subcategorization of these resources. Web documents are listed first and interactive resources, i.e., forums and mailing lists, second. Robert King, Systems Administrator of the SIU School of Medicine, has generoulsy taken on the task of rendering The Medical List into HTML and maintaining the server. A Medical Matrix "What's New" newsletter introduces new Internet medical resources as they are posted to Internet. The newsletter is available to subscribers to the MMATRIX-L mailing list and may be distributed for noncommercial use. 2.4 NEW RESOURCES The entries that have been entered into this database since the last version, December 1, 1994, are designated with ***. An important new resource is The Virtual Medical Center, offerred by Jim Martindale. It provides an index of multimedia medical educational courses available on Internet. Internet provides a rich environment for sharing medical images. A large Dermatological Image Database, an Atlas of Hematology, and the Vanderbilt Pathologic Image Database have recently been posted. CARDIAX (Cardiac Diagnosis), and the Synapse Project from Synapse publishing have joined the Virtual Hospital in offerring innovative interactive educational programs. Medical specialty discussion groups are now well represented with the addition of an opthalmology and neurology mailing list. Cardiology resources have expanded dramatically and includes a Cardiology Compass that provides comprehensive pointers in this field. 3 FEATURED WWW PROGRAMS AND DOCUMENTS 3.1 NLM's PRACTICE GUIDELINES- HSTAT URL: gopher://gopher.nlm.nih.gov:70/11/hstat NLM offers a free, electronic resource which provides access to the full-text of clinical practice guidelines developed under the auspices of the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR). HSTAT also includes other documents useful in health care decision making: NIH Consensus Statements, NIH Technology Assessments, and the U.S Preventive Services Task Force Guide to Clinical Preventive Services. AHCPR Technology Assessments will be added in the future. The NLM Full-TextRetrieval System (FTRS) provides a menu-driven interface to the text of the guidelines and other sources, a table of contents for each document from which a particular section can be selected, and the ability to search by words or phrases. Through Mosaic, it is possible to view the text, graphics, and tables of clinical guidelines in a form which is very similar to the printed copy published by AHCPR. Current documents(1/95) include Screening for Asymptomatic Coronary Artery Disease, High Blood Cholesterol, Hypertension, Cerebrovascular Disease, and Peripheral Arterial Disease, Acute Pain Management, Urinary Incontinence In Adults, Pressure Ulcers in Adults, Cataract in Adults, Depression in Primary Care, Sickle Cell Disease, Early HIV Infection, and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.
